Perfume's power can be reduced to how the human body processes smell. Humans can distinguish between 5000 and 10,000 scents, which begins when odour molecules pass through the nasal passages, which contain millions of smelling sensors known as cilia. The molecules bind to neurones at the top of the nasal passage, which sends messages to the limbic system, which is the seat of emotion and memory formation. But don't let science scare you away. This is simply the hidden formula that explains why fragrance is frequently associated with emotions.
"When a perfume can elicit an emotion, it becomes a part of the wearer's life," says journalist and author Claire Bingham. "It's such a joy to find a fragrance that gives you satisfaction." "My scent is part of my personality," says Rania Naim, creative director of niche perfume house Panouge. We are born with likes and dislikes, just like we are born with taste. We begin to accumulate a smell bank at a young age, thanks to experience and genetics, and this bank develops over time.
"Perfume is one of the greatest - and oldest - senses we have because, like music, it immediately takes us to a place and time," Bingham explains. Smell becomes associated with positive and negative experiences as we grow and our memory bank expands. "Perfume being so inextricably linked to memory, is beauty itself" Bingham continues. Many noses - the talented people who create perfumes - draw on these links when creating a scent. "Anything can spark an idea." Naim describes his work as "a landscape, an opera tune, a pattern, a journey, an expression, and a state of mind."
Noses are frequently on the move, whether in search of the finest ingredients or for inspiration. Many of the best perfumes in the world were inspired by stepping through a door into an exotic garden, experiencing a new culture, or even falling in love. "Traveling around the world, seeing different colours and shapes, and mixing with other cultures stimulates my imagination and enriches the sources of inspiration for new ideas," says Naim.
Because the limbic system is so sensitive, smells can transport you to a specific location. "Smelling an aquatic note can instantly transport you to your last vacation in the South of France, while another scent will bring back memories of your school," Naim explains. And do you remember that particular fragrance that reminds you of your high school sweetheart? "The heady scent of frangipani flies me right back to Sydney," says Bingham. Specifically, a hot summer morning stroll down Bourke Street in Surry Hills." Finding a perfume that evokes a specific memory is a journey in and of itself for many people.
When major life events occur, the desire to reboot your scent is a natural and healthy response. "There is some psychological and neurobiological basis for wanting to change your perfume," says Julie Walsh-Messinger, she studies olfaction, emotion, and social behaviour. "Making a mental shift gives us power and influences our emotions." When you're going through a breakup, the last thing you want to do is smell something that reminds you of your ex. It is simple to change your perfume. It allows you to manage your emotions, avoid old memories, and create new ones.
" It's not a secret that our sense of smell is one of the most powerful links to our emotions and memories.
